The Surfrider Foundation is an environmental organization whose mission is to protect the world's oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. The Beach Water Testing Fridays (BWTF) program was first introduced in Rincón in 2007 - weekly sampling of coastal waters - and since that time has expanded this monitoring for beaches and other bodies of water from Isabela to Añasco.

There is a sizable gender gap in the number of women pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) degrees and careers when compared to men.
